Our five-day workshops this year will be taught by Stanley Mutanga, a master carver with 30 years of experience who was recognized as Zimbabwe’s top sculptor in 2020.
Stanley will guide beginners through the process of planning and finishing a simple piece. Intermediate and advanced artists will benefit from one-on-one mentorship.
Topics covered include: safety equipment, how to select good carving stones, how to make inexpensive tools, how to plan a sculpture, how to recover from mistakes and breakages, and how to mount finished work.
Workshops run from 9am to 4pm, but visitors may arrive early and stay until the gallery closes. Bring your own lunch to eat in our gardens or visit nearby restaurants.
Joining a workshop is an excellent way to make friends and see Kingston. Many participants participate in spontaneous, off-farm outings with other sculptors and gallery staff.
Children 9 and older are welcome to participate if they are joined by an adult--an excellent, unforgettable experience to share with grandchildren.
Students may bring their own carving stone or purchase material here. Tools are provided. 2025 workshops are for hand tools only. (We will introduce advanced workshops with power tools in the future).
Please bring safety gear: gloves, face masks and eye protection.
