People of African descent live in all corners of the world. Initially, much of this travel was coerced, as slave ships freighted human cargo to the so-called "new world." Today’s vibrant diaspora communities in the United States, Brazil, Canada, the Caribbean and beyond were founded through this historical violence. More recently, however, Africans are traveling on their own accord, in pursuit of jobs, education and even adventure. Stanley Mutanga’s “Tracing my Roots” sculpture references this global African diaspora. It portrays a person with luscious dreadlocks cascading past their shoulders. In tracing the flowing hair, viewers notice the silhouette of the African continent near the base of the sculpture. Through this piece, Stanley urges black men and women in the diaspora to contemplate their history, ancestors, and the many complexities which forged their being.
